The Tri-State Wind Symphony has announced Adam O'Dell as the Young Composers Fanfare Contest winner.

O'Dell composed the winning fanfare, which will be performed at the first Tri-State Wind Symphony concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at Eagle Point Park.

O'Dell's $750 award is possible through a Mediacom grant. His fanfare was chosen by area instrumental teachers from submissions from a 14-county area.

O'Dell is graduating from Dubuque Senior High School and plans to attend Clarke University in music composition and drama.

Details of the Tri-State Wind Symphony Young Composer’s Fanfare Contest

  • The fanfare must be an original work.  
  • Contestants must reside or attend school in the Tri-State area – Iowa counties of Dubuque, Buchanan, Clayton, Delaware, Fayette, Jones, Jackson and Clinton; Wisconsin counties of Grant, Crawford, Lafayette and Iowa; and Illinois counties of JoDavies, Carroll and Stephenson.
  • Participants must be no older then 25 years old as of January 1, 2011.
  • The composition must be thirty seconds to one minute and thirty seconds long and written in full standard band instrumentation.  The final version must include readable score parts and be suitable for high school or college band performance.
  • The contest will be promoted through Northeast Iowa Music of Music, the Iowa Composers Forum, local college and high school music programs and local instrumental teachers.
  • Fanfares must be submitted to Lou Sacchini by March 1, 2011.  Lou Sacchini, 6756 8th Ave. Platteville. WI, 53818.  Fanfares may also be dropped off at River Lights Bookstore, 11th and Main Street in Dubuque.  These fanfares should be clearly marked “TSWS Fanfare Contest”.
  • Judges will be three instrumental teachers who are members of the TSWS and selection will be made by May 1, 2011.
  • TSWS will purchase the winning fanfare for $750.  All other participants will receive a certificate of participation and their works will be returned to them.
  • The selected fanfares will become the property of the Tri-State Wind Symphony.
  • Winners will receive their awards at the June 2, 2011, Eagle Point TSWS concert. 
  • The fanfare will be performed at TSWS concerts during the 2011 season and will be the property of the Tri-State Wind Symphony.
